Motion
a selection of my moving images so far…….
Cinematography ShowReel so far….for me it’s an ongoing, always evolving and ever inspiring work in progress.
Here’s the first 100 seconds…..
PAINTBALL
I had a lot of fun making this short film. It doesn’t really have a story to tell. There’s no psycho babble message to convey. It’s just me and a group of guys having a blast, running down corridors, setting off smoke bombs and lighting fires in car tyres.
I found this great location, this amazing derelict building with a bunch of Colombians playing Paintball in its ruins and
I got to film the images that crowded my head.
I saw the golden light and I followed it……
RAFA BOTELLO – PUSH WITH ME
I’ve been really inspired by professional athlete Rafa Botello and his story.
His drive, his desire, his determination and his dignity.
If I was half the man he is, I’d be twice the man I am.
EVOLUTION
a short film I made with contemporary dancer Marie Gabrielle Rotie after taking some stills on sunset.
As soon as I shot the stills I knew I wanted to shoot moving film and I think it’s hard, if not impossible, to do both in the same space of time. When I’m shooting stills I see the motion and want to capture it and when I’m shooting motion I see the still frames that flicker past my eye and are committed to the moving image format.
It’s a fascinating conflict of interests to be caught up in.
THE CHALLENGE
In September 2010 I photographed quad amputee Ray Edwards on assignment for The Guardian.
We got on great and I was fortunate enough to be asked to document his incredible attempt to summit the highest freestanding mountain in the world Mount Kilimanjaro with Charity Challenge.
These images say it better than I ever could….
I’m indebted to Ray for his courage, lack of vanity and dedication to this project and also to the porters and guides of Kilimanjaro who made this such a humbling and memorable trip for me.
THE HARDEST FIGHT
made the top 3 films with ‘The Hardest Fight’ as shown at the Converge Film Festival held at the British Film Institute down on South Bank, 1st & 2nd March 2011.
Gutted I couldn’t be there to see it in person but apparently it was very well received by the audience and held up well on the big screen…Still can’t quite believe that this, my very first short film, is getting such great feedback from the HDDSLR community.
BANGER BOYS
Banger Boys is much more than a bunch of people driving wrecked cars around a muddy field – it’s a return to family traditions, fun days out and entertainment away from the telly and virtual games.
I was inspired by the characters both young and old and this audio visual is a tribute to the people that it documents.
JADE
I shot this footage with the manual in one hand and the camera in the other!!! I didn’t have a clue what I was doing.
Going from stills to motion I didn’t even know what shutter speed to set the camera on for video…Still, for all its technical ‘mistakes’ I like this little black and white film.
